Assam Election 2021: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal casts his vote

DIBRUGARH: After casting his vote at the Sahitya Sabha Bhavan in Dibrugarh, Assam's chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal predicted that all the "party hopefuls" will win in this year's election.

"All our candidates will win by a huge margin and a large chunk of voters are voting for the BJP as the target is a BJP-led government," Sonowal, who is contesting from Majuli Constituency, said.

Asked about the regional parties' (AJP and Raijor Dal) chances in Upper Assam Constituencies, Sonowal said, "There is no question of the electors making them win as the BJP and its allies will be voted into power as they have witnessed immense development here during our tenure which is why they want our party to form the next government as well."

It needs mention here that the BJP has not named him the Chief Ministerial candidate yet, which is seen to reflect the party's dilemma over a bigger role for Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Sonowal won the Majuli seat in the 2016 Assembly election with a margin of 18,923 votes. He had defeated Congress' Rajib Lochan Pegu who had won the seat for three straight terms since 2001.

Majuli is reserved under the Scheduled Tribe category.

Both Sonowal and Pegu are back in the fray for the constituency, which has seen high-profile campaigning by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visiting the area.

The constituency falls under the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha segment and is part of the Jorhat district.

Assam will vote from Saturday to April 6 in three rounds for a new government. The results will be declared on May 2.
