GUWAHATI: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora today urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to count the postal votes before counting those cast at the EVM machines.

"(...) in the last Bihar Assembly Election the postal ballot votes were counted at late night after the EVM votes. For this many discrepancies and complaints were raised during the counting of ballots by many contesting candidates and it was viral on social media," Bora stated in his communique to the election body.

"As a result, many candidates lost in a narrow margin of votes and pointed fingers against the Election Commission," he stated, adding, "therefore, we appeal to your honour to take necessary and proper steps to count the postal ballot votes before the EVM votes so that the votes counting of Assam Assembly Election might be clean and clear and nobody would be able to raise fingers against the Election Commission and oblige."

Bora has also written a letter to the State Chief Electoral Officer Nitin Khade, seeking access to CCTV feeds from strong rooms, where Electronic Voting Machines are kept, to make the process more transparent.

The state Congress president also accused the Election Commission of acting "as per instructions of the BJP".

"After the second phase of the Assembly polls, when many issues relating to EVMs had surfaced, the EC had assured us that no such incident would happen in the third phase. But we are getting reports of people detecting EVMs being transported in private vehicles even during the third phase of polls yesterday. We thought EC would learn from its mistakes, but we were wrong. It proves that EC functions as per the instructions of the BJP. It is not neutral," Bora said at a press conference in Guwahati. yesterday.

The counting of votes for the Assam Assembly Election would be held on 2nd May 2021.
