GUWAHATI: The Congress-led Mahajot (Grand Alliance) has written to the Election Commission of India today expressing apprehension of possible malpractice during the counting of votes on May 2 due to the non-uniformity of counting tables and urged the ECI to make a suitable arrangement for the same.

In the letter, Congress claimed that in many constituencies the arrangement of counting hall and counting tables are not in uniformity and varies from one constituency to the other constituencies.

Congress had also mentioned a few constituencies such as Nazira, Samaguri, Silchar, South Karimganj, Bihpuria, Rupohihat, Badarpur, Borkhola, Dhing, Raha and Lumding, where counting tables are not in proportion to the number of polling stations.

Most of the constituencies mentioned above are currently held by the Mahajot parties and on few others, Mahajot is eyeing to register victory this time.

"We have already seen untoward incident which may led to mal-counting, disturbance in smooth counting and manipulation in counting if counting is continued till night due to less number of counting tables where the number of polling stations are more," a part of the letter reads.

It further added: "...in most of the constituencies the Returning Officers have made arrangement of 21 counting tables in three halls, seven tables in each halls. We think this would be the most ideal arrangement for all the constituencies."

Confident of getting people’s mandate in this Assam assembly polls, Congress and Mahajot have been continuously keeping ECI on the edge and questioning its credibility from time to time, especially after incidents like EVMs recovery from a BJP candidate's vehicle, suspected movement outside strong rooms etc have taken place.
