SILCHAR: At least three persons sustained injuries when personal security officers of Assam assembly deputy speaker Aminul Haque Laskar opened fire on an irate mob at No 463 Madhya Dhanehari LP School in Sonai constituency of Cachar district this evening.
The security personnel resorted to firing when the mob of villagers tried to attack Laskar after his PSOs allegedly assaulted a voter at the polling station for not carrying his voter’s slip to cast his vote.
The injured have been identified by the villagers as Kadir, Baharul Islam lascar and Shamim Haque Choudhury.
Trouble started around 5.30 pm when Laskar, the BJP MLA from the constituency, allegedly started checking voters’ slips and identity cards of the few people left in the queue to cast their votes. Eyewitnesses said, when a security person asked Kadir for his voter’s slip, he said he forgot to carry it but insisted that he should be allowed to cast his vote because he was carrying the voter’s identity card.
As Kadir continued to argue with, Laskar suddenly went up to him and caught him by his color. Laskar’s security men immediately started indiscriminately assaulting Kadir with gun butts injuring him badly, the eyewitnesses said.
Soon villagers gathered and started pelting stones at the MLA’s security. The security personnel started firing in retaliation leading to injuries to two more youth.
Laskar could not be contacted for his comments.
Laskar is the only minority community candidate to win the 2016 assembly elections on a BJP ticket.
