GUWAHATI: After a strong earthquake measuring 6.7 struck Assam and Northeast causing widespread damage this morning at 7.51 am, the state has recorded as many as six aftershocks.
Six of the seven tremors had their epicenters in Sonitpur district, with one in Nagaon.

State health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared this on Twitter and wrote, "There have been at least 6 aftershocks felt in Assam since the massive 6.7 magnitude earthquake shook the state at 7.51 am. Of the total 7 tremors, the epicenter of 6 was in Sonitpur district and one in Nagaon district."
The earthquake was epicentered in Assam's Sonitpur district, but tremors were felt in other parts of the Northeast and as far away as North Bengal.
Six aftershocks with magnitudes measuring from 3.2 to 4.7 were reported in the vicinity of Sonitpur district over the next 2 hours 30 minutes.

The tremors have damaged many properties and cracks developed on a number of buildings in many places, walls have collapsed, and windows have been broken in some places in the state, although, no report of loss of human life has been reported so far.
Moreover, prime minister Narendra Modi, union home minister Amit Shah have assured all possible help to the citizens of the state from the Centre.
