19 July 2018:

Fifteen wild buffaloes died after getting trapped in water-hyacinth in Dibru River's Koliapani Ghat in Tinsukia district.

The deaths occurred over a period of time in the aftermath of the last bout of the floods. It was learnt that the water-hyacinth has covered almost the entire Maguritapung Beel which is located nearby. The river water flows into the beel during floods.

The locals alleged the water-hyacinth was also the reason behind the deaths of a large number of fish and other animals.

“The floods, which occurred 15 days ago, had led to the increase in the growth of water-hyacinth in the entire beel,” said Nironto Gohain, general secretary of the central committee of Environment and Nature Firm Sustainable Development Power.

He also said that though the locals tried to clean up the way by uprooting the hyacinth, yet they failed to save the lives of the buffaloes.
