Assam: Flood wrath continues, death toll increased to 10

The Assam floods have been rampant this year with the onset of monsoon. This has already affected major districts of the state. However, the effects have lessened in recent days, with now Gaolpara, Nagaon, Hojai, and Cachar facing its impact.

None of the rivers are over the danger level as of now. However, the destruction caused by the floods still remains.

A total of 212 villages are still impacted. So far, a total of 144322 people are affected. This has increased from 30,000 people initially on the first day to 1,94,916 to 2,71,655 to 2,90,000 but now it has decreased put out by the previous data released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

Most affected areas

Out of the almost 2 lakh people affected, the most are from Goalpara (116049) with Balijana, Matia, and Lakipur facing the maximum brunt. Another dynamic of the problem in Goalpara has been the water from the Garo Hills, Meghalaya flowing down to the villages. Apart from the submerged areas of Balijana and Lakipur, there are other places that risk getting affected by flood. Kampur in Nagaon is also affected.

Further high-risk zones due to Assam floods

1 person has been found dead in Goalpara's Lakhipur. Earlier, 9 casualties were reported.

The water of Kopili, Amreng, and Umlong river has submerged the adjacent areas of the region. People have left for the safest places. Flood submerged the area.

Earlier, 2 human lives have been lost in Nagaon Kampur region.

In Nagaon district, the Kopili river in Kampur and Noikhiri has taken a violent form. In Kampur town, areas have got submerged and relief camps have been setup

Other big losses

So far there is a significant loss of animals with 13195 big, 4721 medium, and 11816 poultry.

The total crop area affected so far is 22717 hectares with 11987 in Goalpara.

Along with floods, there are instances of erosion and landslides especially in the revenue circles of Dima Hasao, Haflong.

As such, there are 21 relief camps opened in Cachar, Hojai, and Goalpara, and there are 2913 inmates in these camps. But, how will those function under corona is a bigger question?
