Assam flood scenario worsens; over 1 lakh people in 234 villages affected

GUWAHATI: Assam's flood scenario takes a grimmer turn on Friday affecting over 1.33 lakh people across 11 districts, stated a bulletin issued by Assam Assam State Disaster Management Agency (ASDMA).

Districts including Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Sivasagar, Sonitpur and Tinsukia have been severely flooded triggered by heavy downpour.

Reportedly, no casualty has been reported yet.

Over 160 people and 40 animals were evacuated safely by boats.

The District administration of Bongaigaon and Chirang have set relief camps. As many as 6217 people have been shifted to those camps.

Dhemaji and Tinsukia districts too have kept camps ready for emergency situation.

As per ASDMA, 243 villages have been affected so far due to inundation caused by flood waters of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries.

It added that the highest number of 63,891 people have been affected in Bongaigaon, followed by 31,500 in Dhemaji and 13,239 in Majuli.

16 roads were damaged in Bongaingaon and Dhemaji due to flood. No breaching of embankments reported.

Several places in Baksa, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Goalpara, Cachar, Jorhat, Kokrajhar, Majuli, Morigaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur and Tinsukia have witnessed erosion.

The India Meteorological Department had issued warning for heavy rainfall for the next couple of days across the state on Tuesday.
