SILCHAR: On Sunday, Assam Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya termed the Manipuri community as the "heroes of the nation" at a function held in Silchar district.
The Dholai Subdivision of the All Assam Manipuri Women Meira Paibi Co-ordination Committee gave a rousing welcome to State Forest and Environment Minister Parimal Suklabaidya here on Sunday.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Suklabaidya said, "I am overwhelmed to be greeted by Meira Paibi."
He said that the way in which the Meira Paibi Women's Organisation is doing an impeccable job in social life is truly commendable, especially the efforts of this organization to bring the young generation of the society on the right path from being misled.
He also opined that there are many lessons to be learnt from the women of Manipuri society and that women are playing a pivotal role in influencing others in a big way.
He said that the womenfolk of Manipuri community came out and protested against the evil forces of the society.

"Many people think that this protest is only against alcohol, gambling and other vices but it is in essence a protest against the demonic powers of society, the evil powers of the society, the mindset to harm the society," he quipped.
He further said that it was not just today's protest but the people of Manipuri community did not forget the role of "Chitrangada" in the battle of Mahabharata - Chitrangada who tried to fight against Kauravas from Pandava's family.
He said, "It is not that the Manipuri community has taken up the gauntlet from today, it is your tradition, your mentality, the mentality of fighting against injustice. That is why we have called the Manipuri community heroes of the nation since the battle of Mahabharata and flag-bearer for justice.
Suklabaidya said that he stand beside Meira Paibi through thick and thin and would draw the attention of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to the long-standing demand of the Manipuri community for a Manipuri Autonomous Council.
Besides, Suklabaidya promised to construct the office building of Meira Paibi at the meeting, drawing loud cheers. President of All Assam Manipuri Women Meira Paibi Co-ordination Committee Dholai Subdivision, Bimala Rajkumari presided over the function held at Dholai Bazar Dasi Mandir Marriage Hall. Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, Keerthi Jalli, also spoke on the occasion.
