GUWAHATI: After months of speculation, Shyamal Saikia, a former DIG of Assam, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the ensuing polls in the state.
Saikia today posted pictures from the joining ceremony along with the words, "Thanks a lot hon’ble President BJP Assam Pradesh Shri Ranjeet Kumar Dass sir, hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam Shri Sarbananda Sonowal sir, hon’ble Convenor of NEDA Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma sir, hon’ble State General Secretary (org) Shri Phanindranath Sarma sir for giving me the chance to join in BJP....Need blessings from my friends and well wishers for my new journey..."

In the past few months, the BJP party has been bolstered by the joining of several high-profile persons from Assam, including celebrities such as singer Simanta Sekhar and . Additionally, prominent Congress leaders Ajanta Neog and Rajdeep Gowalla have also switched over to the BJP camp.
Meanwhile, Congress has formed a grand alliance with five other parties for Assam Assembly elections.
The alliance includes Congress, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML) and Anchalik Gana Morcha.
