Barpeta, December 30, 2019:

A Gandhian from Assam has decided to walk on the path of non-violence, demanding the withdrawal of Citizenship (Amendment) Act. The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, amid growing tensions, has successfully united people and brought forth several kinds of agitation, violent as well as peaceful.

This time, it has also awakened the Gandhi to protest nonviolently and demand withdrawal of the CAA, which has been rejected for the betterment of the country.

A Gandhian has decided to walk on the path of non-violence, demanding the scrapping of the contentious CAA. Noted poet Gunajit Sarma has begun his walk from Assam’s Barpeta district to Guwahati. His motive is to encourage the people of Assam to follow the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and continue opposing the CAA nonviolently.

Sarma will be submitting a memorandum to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to look into the matter of withdrawing the CAA. “The artistes, All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), intellectuals and many other organisations have chosen the path of protesting nonviolently. A third party is trying to malign the intention of their efforts. I am opposing against that and at the same time I would like to encourage people to follow Gandhian principle of non-violence,” said Gunajit Sarma.

Sarma is an active member of Barpeta Poets’ Association. He also wishes to submit a memorandum to President Ramnath Kovind. “Since we are from the land of the Mahatma, I urge people to follow his principles and carry on their Andolan,” he said.

The Gandhian also cautioned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of its actions in Assam. He said, “I have nothing to say to the government. However, in Assam if the BJP does not act according to the interests of the public, it will be erased from Assam completely. It’s very clear.”
