Hailakandi, May 29, 2019:

With the first wave of a flood hitting neighbouring Karimganj district, the Hailakandi Water Resources Division has upped its ante to accelerate the pace of flood protection and anti-erosion measures.

As part of the flood protection measures, the Water Resources Division is working on a war footing to strengthen the embankments and plugging the breached portions along the banks of Katakhal, Dhaleswari and Barak rivers.

The district administration has asked the Water Resources engineers and personnel to gird up their loins to ensure that the embankments are bolstered and breached portions plugged following the arrival of monsoon in the district.

The District Disaster Management Authority is closely monitoring the water levels of Katakhal, Dhaleswari and Barak rivers at Matijuri, Gharmura and Annapurna ghat sites. Presently the three rivers are flowing several meters below the danger level.

Anti-erosion works from Kalacherra to Gudamghat at Goalipar under Sudarshanpur Part III and at Bashdahar area on the left bank of Katakhal river have been completed, while works are in progress at Sahabad-Rongpur area, Panchgram Das Colony and at Katlicherra Bagan area adjacent to NH154.

Strengthening of embankment along left bank from Mohammedpur to Bishnupur covering a stretch of 5.54 km under NABARD, from Gaglacherra to Nutanbazar under SDRF and improvement of Dhaleswar-Katakhal drainage Basin II at Tasla dam, including breach closing have been completed, while works are going on at Dhaleswari and Katakhal drainage basin II at Boroitoli under SDRF, from Mohanpur to confluence of Katakhal river under Kalinagar Part V, Chotojalenga-Rosekandi, Nalubak and Bourbon under Rajyeswarpur Part I from Ratanpurghat to Mohonpur and at Kuchilaghat under Bashdahar Part I.

The Water Resources authorities here disclosed that breaches have been plugged on the stretch from Gaglacherra to Nutanbazar Phase I, Kunkun bosti area, from Sahabad to Mohemmedpur and at Bakrihaor area near Hatia under Hailakandi civil subdivision, while works are in progress on the portions from Mohadevtilla to Rupacherra Bunglowtilla, from Bishnupur to Gaglacherra and from Mohadevtilla to Rupacherra.
