Assam: GMC Carries out ‘Eviction Drive’ to Free Up Space Occupied by Illegal Street Vendors

Guwahati, March 19, 2020:

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Thursday carried out an eviction drive at the city’s busy Fancy Bazaar area following the directions of the Gauhati High Court.

The eviction drive was aimed at clearing the traffic congestion created by the street vendors in Guwahati’s Fancy Bazaar area. Police personnel, public and the concerned authorities gathered for the day’s activities in the already crowded market area.

Vehicles parked at ‘No Parking’ zones were also picked up by the authorities. Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta also arrived at the spot to inspect the eviction drive conducted by GMC.

While speaking with mediapersons, he said, “Today, GMC, GMD (Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority), everyone has come, especially from the Transport sector. We will carry out the drive phase-wise. We have come here to see the scene here today and then we will think of the alternative. Today 1, 500 vehicles have been seized here in Jail road. The public also will have to put in some effort.”

He said that the vehicles should be parked in the allotted spaces, which would be expanded for public convenience.

“Violation will not be tolerated anymore. We will consider those as ones that are intended to take over public property. We will consider it as a conspiracy and we will straight away take action against them,” he added.

The DGP added that several CCTV cameras will be installed in the city

Speaking on the lines of coronavirus, he urged the public to follow the rules set by the Government and restrict their movements. "Public should be responsible and pay attention. If 5 lakh people in Assam get this infection, the entire health system may collapse.
