Amid the gloomy state of affairs in Assam, the state cabinet has approved the Transgender policy, thereby giving the community a reason to celebrate after years of struggle.
Speaking with Inside Northeast, Transgender Advocate and noted activist Swati Bidhan Baruah informed that after the passing of the policy in the cabinet, the Transgender Welfare Board of Assam will directly come into existence, which will look into matters relating to the community.
“The Transgender Welfare Board will be working on the employment of the transgender people, their educational reservation and various health issues. It will also play a vital role in removing the discrimination existing in the society against the community,” she said.
“I am very happy that the Assam government has finally approved the policy after ten long years of fighting for this. We will continue to walk for the development of the community for their reservation, health, skill development and empowerment,” added Swati.
She also informed that in order to celebrate the achievement, a Transgender Parade will be organized in the month of March. “It was not an easy fight for us. So we have decided to celebrate the achievement. We will be organizing a separate Transgender Pride Parade to celebrate the transgender community and feminism,” informed Swati.
