Assam Government Fixes Price of Onions at Rs 66 in Guwahati

Guwahati, November 7, 2019:

With the hue-and-cry continuing in Assam (and across the country) over the rising prices of onions, Assam Food and Supplies Minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury's announcement will provide some much needed relief to consumers.

Choudhury, after a meeting with members of the Onion and Potato Merchant Association at Dispur on Wednesday, announced that all the businessmen in have been instructed to fix the price of onions at Rs 66 after the prices reportedly touched the Rs. 80 mark. The prices will be fixed at Rs. 66 from Thursday onwards.

he Minister asked the merchants to ensure that the retailers sell onion at a uniform price of Rs 66 per kg. On their part, the members of the merchant association said that heavy rains lashed Nasik, one of the leading producers of onions, for the past three days, leading to the rise in prices of the commodity there itself.

The Minister further clarified that the spike in onion prices is a result of incessant rains, due to which the crops could be be harvested on time.

A worried consumer told Inside Northeast, "I had gone to the market to purchase some onions, but was dumbstruck when I he seller quoted Rs 80 as price. I immediately called my husband and told him that maybe we should have apples for dinner instead., as the price of onions is too high".
