Assam Govt Dissolves Dibrugarh Municipal Board Over 'Financial Irregularities'

Dibrugarh, November 26, 2019:

The Assam government has dissolved the Dibrugarh Municipal Board (DMB), over financial irregularities.

A notification, vide No. UDD(M)/15 1/2009/358, was issued to the urban development department (UDD) to dissolve the civic body with immediate effect.

It may be mentioned here that on November 3, the Secretary to the Government of Assam, Urban Development Department, HD Sarma, had filed an inquiry into the alleged illegal activities in the DMB.

The state government, acting on the inquiry, has dissolved the BJP-led civic body on charges of improper maintenance of main cash book/ logbooks for office vehicles, irregularities in leasing out Municipal lands, conduction of tendering process for allotment of market/ parking/ hoardings, etc. without board resolution, improper maintenance of the record of Urban Local Bodies’ assets and financial irregularities.

The Assam government observed that the DMB had failed to serve the people and failed to perform its duties as desired and directed to dissolve the DMB with immediate effect.

It has also directed the Deputy Commissioner of Dibrugarh to take charge of the municipal board.

It may be stated here that the Chairperson of the DMB, Soma Chakraborty had been charged with the failure to provide financial details of revenue and expenditure and also a failure to take corrective measures to curb corruption in departments like hoardings and sanitary.
