Guwahati, June 3, 2019:

The Assam government has adopted a policy of introducing modern education system in madrasas in the state and is soon going to implement it.

“I have approved the policy and very soon, the government will implement it,” Assam education minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya told Inside Northeast during the sidelines of a programme in Guwahati.

He, however, did not divulge the details of the policy to be implemented by the government.

On being asked what government thinks about the educational curriculam of Hafiji Madrasas, Mr. Bhattacharya has said that Hafiji Madrasas should incorporate modern subjects in their curriculam for the betterment of the Muslim community.

Though Hafiji Madrasas are not under the purview of the government, yet the government wants them to incorporate modern subjects.

“Hafiji Madrasas are basically to impart theological knowledge to the students who joined them . But along with that, we feel they should have incorporated curricula for these students to know the computer, to know the modern mathematical science. That is very necessary,” Mr. Bhattacharya said.

“As education minister I would like to see modern subjects, I would rather say ‘necessary subjects’ to be included into their curriculum,” he added.
