In a big relief to to the more than nineteen lakh people excluded from the Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC), the Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a statement where it is mentioned that the names which have not been included in the list, will be provided with legal aid. This will be done through the District Legal Services Authorities.
Moreover, these people will get 120 days to file appeal at the Foreigners Tribunals (FTs).
Meanwhile, the Congress leaders are also on standby to provide legal aid and counsel to the people who have been excluded. This was announced by Congress' Nagaon Lok Sabha MP, Pradyut Bordoloi, yesterday.
After publication of the NRC earlier today, Prateek Hajela, the State Coordinator, NRC said, “A total of 3,11,21,004 persons have been found eligible for inclusion in final draft, leaving out 19,06,657 persons, including those who did not submit their claims.
“Those not satisfied with outcome can file appeals before the Foreigners Tribunals”, he added.
It may be mentioned here that the fear of being excluded from the NRC has caused a great deal of suffering to a large number of the people of Assam
It has been discovered that about 89% who have been excluded from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) are suffering from anxiety.
This staggering figure has been revealed by a survey by the National Campaign Against Torture (NCAT) has revealed.
Moreover, many people in Assam have even committed suicide after being omitted from the NRC.
