GUWAHATI: A report in a prominent news channel suggests that the Assam government is planning to downsize the security detail of VIPs (including politicians) in a dramatic change to the system. The report in TV news channel DY 365 also suggests that the changes will be approved by the Cabinet in January 1 of 2022.

The report said that sources had revealed that the Cabinet Ministers will get an escort and pilot car, in addition to 4 security personnel.

On the other hand, MLAs are likely to get 4 security guards, but no escort, the report said, adding that the district level politicians will not get any security detail whatsoever.

If the rumoured changes do take place, current Congress president and former MLA Bhupen Bora will only get 4 security personnel and no escorts.

Meanwhile, the Chief Secretary of the state will be allotted an escort as well as 4 personal security guards. However, additional chief secretaries will only get 4 bodyguards and no escorts.

However, there will be changes in the security of Chief Minister Biswa Sarma, Governor Jagadish Mukhi, and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

The changes were reportedly suggested by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the situation is starting to "cool down" in Assam.

According to reports, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is enjoying a sojourn in Uttarakhand where he is apparently mulling these new changes.

Ever since he became the chief minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma has been making swift changes to the system, many of which he had proposed in the lead up to the elections.

In the northeast, Himanta Biswa Sarma continues to be a political asset in expanding the BJP's base in the northeast region -- a territory where the saffron party had no presence till a few years ago -- since his switch from the Congress.
