Assam Govt Trying to Stop NRC in a Bid to Save 'Hindu-Bangladeshis': Akhil Gogoiassam

Guwahati, August 28, 2019:

Many personalities of Assam have weighed in on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) ahead of its August 31 publication, and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) Chief has joined the brigade of leaders to opine on the issue.

While addressing the press here today, Akhil Gogoi said that the BJP party and the Assam administration are attempting to stop the NRC process.

"BJP party and the Government both are trying to obstruct the NRC and trying to create a breakdown of the law-and-order situation in the State. Both Hindu and Muslim communal forces are trying to create a situation of unrest -- the tensions and misgivings among the people are being exacerbated by the designs of the BJP. RSS supporters are also carrying out campaigns to rile up the public", he said.

Gogoi further said that Assam Chief Minister (Sarbananda Sonowal) and Home Minister (Amit Shah) will be personally responsible if there is any trouble after publication of the NRC. "The Government is trying to obstruct the NRC to save the Hindu Bangladeshis", Gogoi said, adding that the public does not have similar misgivings about the NRC.

It is to be mentioned here that the publication date of the final draft of the Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC) marches ever-closer, as the NRC-body, headed by Co-Ordinator Prateek Hajela prepares to release the list on August 31.

The demand for the NRC started in 1980, ahead of the Assam Agitation of 1985, which had a great impact on the State and culminated in the signing of the highly-controversial ‘Assam Accord’.

A long spell of discussions and deliberations followed after the signing of the Assam Accord, and the Government of India and the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) presided at the negotiating table for ten long years (1998-2008).

Modalities were prepared from 2008-2013, and actual work, under the supervision of the Supreme Court, began in 2013.
