Golaghat, January 3, 2019:

Amid the nationwide protests against the contentious amendment of the Amendment Act, a spine-chilling incident of open firing occurred at Ganakpukhri Habiyal, a small village in Golaghat district of Assam.

After a massive protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act in neighboring Dergaon that was attended by local celebrities such as Mahendra Hazarika and Bipin Chowdang, terror would strike the hearts of the locals in the Assam village.

At around 9 pm, miscreants turned up outside the house of a local Congress leader, Rita Rajkhowa, and let off a volley of bullets outside her residence. It may be mentioned that an anti-CAA brigade leader called Binoy Bora was also present at Rajkhowa's house when the attack happened. Bora's vehicle a Maruti Van vehicle, was also fired upon -- bullets pierced the vehicle 3 times, and a side windshield was shattered. It is pertinent to mention here both Bora and Rajkhowa had taken active participation in the rally against the 'CAA' earlier in the afternoon.

Eyewitnesses have reported that the shooters had arrived in a black-colored vehicle, and some miscreants had fired bullets after getting down from the vehicle.

An Inside Northeast source informs "Nobody knows who fired the shots. However, locals believe that they were attacked for opposing the CAA."

This incident soon sent shockwaves of fear among the people, and the local police authorities soon turned up at the site to take stock of the situation.

Golaghat SP Pushparaj Singh said that the local authorities were informed about the firing at around 9:30 pm on December 2. He informed that as many as 7 rounds of MP cartridges were found by police. Witnesses have given statements, and some clues have been discovered. Efforts are on to identify the culprits, the SP stated.

It may be mentioned here that not too long ago, Khumtai's BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia had urged the people of the region to lash out against the ones protesting the 'CAA' should be met with force.

"If they harm one of you, harm ten of them"", the Assam MLA had said, in a controversial speech that made national media headlines for its apparent advocacy of brutal force.
