With the start of community transmission of the lethal COVID-19 in Guwahati, Assam, the city is likely to go under complete lockdown from June 26th, 2020 evening.
Pijush Hazarika, the Minister of State, Health and Family Welfare, said, “There are chances of complete lockdown in Guwahati if COVID-19 cases continue rising.” He confirmed the start of community transmission in the city.
Meanwhile, the Kamrup (Metro) district administration today closed down the Beltola daily and by-weekly market citing the non-maintenance of social distancing and rise in COVID-19 cases.
According to the District Disaster Management Authority, Kamrup (M), there are a total of 141 active COVID-19 containment zones in the district as on June 20th, 2020.
On June 23rd, 2020, the district administration enforced lockdown in 11 wards in Guwahati, Assam to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 with effect from 9 pm on June 23rd, 2020, for 14 days, deputy commissioner Biswajit Pegu said.

He further informed that all the government and private offices, business establishments, religious places, and educational institutions will remain closed during the period of lockdown, which will remain in force until further orders. However, the essential services and the healthcare services will be exempted from the restriction.
The COVID-19 has infected 552 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the district so far; of which 216 are active cases and 329 have been cured and discharged, according to the data provided by the Government of Assam on its website.
Assam currently has 6370 confirmed COVID-19 cases; of which 2400 are active cases while 3958 have been cured and recovered and nine died due to the infection in the state so far.

It may be mentioned that the first phase of the nationwide complete lockdown was enforced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 25th, 2020 initially for 21 days, which was later extended phase wise. However, from June 1st, 2020, the lockdown was eased down across the nation except the red zone areas.
