Assam: Hailakandi enforces total lockdown to contain spread of COVID-19

The Hailakandi district administration in Assam has enforced total lockdown in municipal and market places across the district to arrest further spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

In an order issued to this effect on Friday evening, Deputy Commissioner cum Chairman, District Disaster Management Authority, Megh Nidhi Dahal said the total lockdown would be strictly enforced in Hailakandi municipal area, Lala Town Committee area, Katlicherra, Algapur and Panchgram bazaar areas every Saturday and Sunday. The order stated that during the period of total lockdown, movement of people and vehicles would remain prohibited, barring those on essential and emergency services.

The order also stated that night curfew would also be strictly enforced from 7 pm to 7 am in all areas of the district, including rural areas until further orders.

It warned that anyone violating the order would be liable to be prosecuted as per provisions of Section 51 to 60 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, besides legal action under Section 188 of the IPC and other provisions of law.

It may be mentioned that the Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on June 26^th, 2020 declraed complete lockdown in Guwahati with effect from June 28^th, 2020 midnight and weekend lockdown in the town and municipal areas across the state to prevent the spread of the COVID-19.

The lockdown in Guwahati will be enforced strictly for the first seven days. The minister stated that pharmacies nothing will remain open for the first seven days.

The city alone has reported 203 confirmed COVID-19 cases on June 26^th, 2020. The state has registered nearly 7000 confirmed COVID-19 cases and nine deaths so far.
