GUWAHATI: Assam is the home to second-highest number of elephants in the entire country, informed Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on the occasion of World Elephant Day on Thursday.
To mark the occasion, the Chief Minister took to Twitter and wrote, "Assam has the second-highest number of elephants in India. The gentle giant also holds a great historical significance for our State. On
class="css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0">, let us resolve to protect this majestic animal as well as its habitat."The World Elephant Day is observed all across the world to spread awareness on protection of the elephants. The observation was initiated on August 12, 2012, when Thailand-based Elephant Reintroduction Foundation teamed up with Canadian filmmaker Patricia Sims.
The World Elephant Society by Sims' has reached out to many people educating them on the plight of elephants and spreading awareness.
