The Assam health department on Saturday urged the State Election Commission to postpone Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections. The department sent the letter to  election commission in wake of COVID-19 pandemic. 

Assam Health & Family welfare minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “The health department has asked the state election commission to postpone the BTC polls. We have written to the commission to postpone the elections and withdraw the model code of conduct.”

Sarma stated that if elections take place in Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD), the COVID-19 infection will spread further to non-BTAD districts.

It may be mentioned that many political party leaders were seen addressing public rallies in the BTAD defying COVID-19 protocol. Assam Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare Pijush Hazarika on Friday addressed a huge gathering in Baksa district. Hundreds of people were seen sitting together without maintaining social distance.
