Assam: Illegal money lenders harass people, allegedly pay off police personnel, claims victim's family in Gauripur

A violent altercation took place on the nefarious operations of illegal money lenders in Ashtamirchar under the jurisdiction of the Gauripur police station. The incident left several individuals injured, sparking outrage among locals who have long suffered under the shadow of unlawful financial practices.

The focal point of the controversy is Omar Ali, a figure accused of orchestrating a longstanding money lending enterprise that operates outside the bounds of legality. According to reports, Ali has routinely harassed members of the community in pursuit of his usurious transactions.

The genesis of the conflict traces back to a loan of Rs 1.5 lakh extended to Ali by a man named Zahar Uddin. While Uddin made partial repayments, he found himself unable to settle the entire debt. This financial strain culminated in a brazen attempt by Ali and his associates to encroach upon Uddin's farmland.

Tensions reached a boiling point when Uddin and his brothers intervened to protect their property. However, instead of resolution, the confrontation spiraled into violence, with Uddin and several others reportedly subjected to a vicious assault by Ali's cohorts. Uddin sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

Adding fuel to the fire, Uddin's family alleges that Ali has leveraged his purported connections within law enforcement circles to evade accountability. They claim that Ali boasted of paying off police personnel to shield himself from repercussions. Despite their efforts to seek assistance from the authorities, Uddin's relatives have encountered obstacles in reaching out to law enforcement.
