Incessant rainfall triggered massive landslides in several parts of hilly terrains in Guwahati in Assam in the wee hours of June 26th, 2020. The rainwater inundated several parts in the city disrupting the public movement.
In Kahilipara in the city, a house was damaged after a guard wall collapsed due to landslide. In the incident, at least four people including the house owner Hemakanta Bora sustained injuries. His wife and child somehow escaped the accident.
Three of them injured were rushed to the Hayat Hospital for medical assistance. However, one Bharat Kalita is still trapped under the landslide. State Disaster Management Authority (SDRF) personnel are continuing their rescue operation till this report is being filed.
Incidents of landslides were also reported from Maligaon and Jalukbari in the city. Meanwhile, a big tree was uprooted near the Dighalipukhuri in Guwahati which was later cleared by the administration.
Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati on June 25th, 2020, forecasted heavy rainfall over Northeastern states during next 5 days.
“Due to Northward shift of eastern side of East-West trough across East & Northeast India and convergence of strong southerly/ south-westerly winds from Bay of Bengal over Northeast & adjoining east India, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to continue and Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over northeast India during next 4-5 days,” the IMD, Guwahati stated in a press release.
