The Jorhat district administration, Assam declared a complete lockdown in the town from July 9th to July 15th, 2020 to arrest the spread of the COVID-19 infection.

The decision came immediately after 19 persons have been tested COVID positive on July 6th, 2020. All the 19 cases were detected from Rojamaidam area of the town and have no travel history.

Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Roshni A Korati said that under section 34 of the Disaster Management Act 2005, the total lockdown has been imposed in the areas under Jorhat Municipal Board.

All government offices and markets would remain closed as per the order.

She said, “The district administration has decided to conduct a targeted sample testing in crowded areas of the town like the market place, shopping malls, and restaurants. This will give us a clear picture of possible community transmission.”

In Jorhat, the total number of positive cases had been 224 out of which 68 are active.

Assam reported a total of 786 COVID-19 cases on July 6th, 2020 taking the state’s total to 12,522. Of the 12,522 cases, 4623 are active cases while 7882 have been cured and discharged and 14 died due to the infection in the state so far. Guwahati alone reported a surge of 598 cases on June 6th, 2020.

Informing this, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted:

Assam has crossed the 1000-mark in 60 days. It reported the first case on March 31st, 2020. Guwahati registered 195 COVID-19 cases on June 28th, 172 on June 29th, 380 on June 30th, 378 cases on July 1st, 238 cases on July 2nd, 134 on July 3rd, 777 on July 4th and 552 on July 5th, 2020.
