Guwahati, January 24, 2020:

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) supreme Akhil Gogoi, who was arrested amid the massive protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days, on January 24.

Gogoi was on Friday presented at the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Court in Chandmari, Guwahati, after which he was sentenced to judicial custody. Gogoi, addressing Assam at large through the means of the media, urged the people to launch a mass resistance movement against the Government’s policies, and said that the time for “peaceful” demonstrations is over.

It may be mentioned here that four leaders affiliated to the peasants' body have been arrested by the NIA. Apart from Gogoi, his deputy Dhairjya Konwar, and Bitu Sonowal have been booked by the NIA under the amended Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act UAPA for ‘waging war against the nation’ and accused of being a ‘Maoist’.
