Guwahati (Assam), August 20, 2018:

Assam is likely to miss the panchayat poll deadline. The reason is the lack of manpower to conduct the election.

According to official sources, a large number of government officials are currently engaged in the ongoing updation of National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The Commissioner of Assam State Election Commission (ASEC), HN Bora, said the Commission would not be able to hold the elections on time as the government officials were engaged in the NRC updation process. He informed that the Commission was preparing to file a review petition in the Gauhati High Court in this regard.

It may be mentioned that the Gauhati HC had instructed the Election Commission to complete the panchayat polls within September 15 this year. Later, the Supreme Court had also instructed it to hold the polls by requisitioning personnel from neighbouring states.
