The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) General Secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi and President Dipanka Kumar Nath have decided to float a new party. The expected party is to begin operations from December. Speaking to Inside Northeast, Dipanka Nath confirmed that talks of a new party are there. On the issue of him and Lurinjyoti leaving the Apex Student Union body, he replied, "we can't confirm anything as yet".
After the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) a host of leaders have been vocal about the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP). However, as revealed by Dipanka Nath, the new party will take in such people but it will not be limited to only opposing the BJP. "The party will be starting a new Jatiyotabadi (regional) politics in the state and we will take people who believe in that new ideology".

Inside Northeast also contacted Lurin Jyoti Gogoi regarding their future in AASU. Gogoi has reserved his comments to the reporter. As per the insiders from the affiliated student groups believe that the new party announcement might come in October.
The upcoming 2021 Assembly elections will be interesting to see who provides the opposition to incumbent BJP. Another dynamic will be the Congress stand to appropriate the opposition raised against BJP. Whether they will appropriate those voices in their party or leave a space for them to win at places by not pitching a candidate. As things stands amid the COVID-19, one can say election favour has gripped the state.
