MARGHERITA: A man was trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants in Assam's Tinsukia district.

The deceased person has been identified as 30-year-old Sandeswar Sensowa.

The incident took place on Sunday evening at Kotha Kasarani under Jagun Forest Range office of 124 No Margherita Constituency around 7:30 pm.

According to sources, the deceased had gone to his brother's house in the same area to give fish, when he was trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants.

Meanwhile, on getting information from the villagers, the forest department staff reached the spot and investigated the incident.

It is worth noting that, as a result of extensive deforestation in the Digboi Forest Division's Jagun, Lekhapani, Margherita, Makum qilla, and many other Forest Reserve areas, wild elephants, monkeys, and other wild animals wander near residential areas in search of food.

If any human being comes into contact with them, death is almost certain.

Many valuable trees are illegally cut every day in various forest reserve areas under the Digboi forest reserve, but corrupt forest department officials and other staffs allow the illegally loaded timber trucks to trespass due to monetary considerations.

If the Assam government does not take any positive steps in the near future, wild elephants and other wild animals will soon be loitering in the town areas in 124 no Margherita Constituency, said a Margherita nature lover.
