Taking affront at languages other than Assamese being used in shop hoardings, the Margherita Regional Student Union on Saturday removed all hoardings, signboards and banners at Margherita Bazaar and Segunbari area in the Assam town.

Many business establishments, factory owners and shopkeepers have put up sign boards and banners in English, Hindi and Bengali language, whereas the Assamese language, made compulsory under the has been neglected by the Businessman community of Margherita Region, informed Rupam Baruah, the General Secretary of Margherita Regional Student Union.
The student leader also informed us that the All Assam Students' Union has repeatedly given notice to all the business establishments of Margherita region. "But then also, they have flouted our repeated requests and today we have personally visited all the shops of Margherita Bazaar and removed and torn all the hoardings, glow sign boards as well as banners", Baruah informed us, adding, "we urge the Margherita Businessmen immediately remove all those hoardings, glow sign boards and banners which are written in english, hindi and bengali language and instead write the names in Assamese within 10 days...."

"We have even observed that at Margherita Bazaar, due to some petty businesses, footpath has been encroached upon...due to which some pedestrians and commuters find it difficult to walk. The Margherita Municipal Board has never tried to evacuate the petty businesses, which regularly makes a nuisance at Margherita Bazaar and its surrounding areas...we urge the Margherita Administration (Civil) and Margherita Municipal board to immediately to take action against those petty businesses which have illegally occupied Margherita Bazaar footpath" Rupam Baruah added.
