GUWAHATI: Even as the Assam Assembly elections continue to draw, it has come to light that many of the Congress party's leaders are planning to jump ship to the rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Several top leaders of the Grand Old Party are likely to join bitter opponents BJP during Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit later in the month.
With months to go till polls, two MLAs from Upper Assam -- Ajanta Neog (Golaghat) and Roselina Tirkey (Sarupathar) -- are almost a lock to contest the polls on a BJP ticket.
At the same time, another MLA, Rajdeep Gowala, is also likely to be inducted into the Congress.
According to reports, senior Congressman and Cabinet Minister during Tarun Gogoi's tenure, Rakibul Hussain, is also said to be in talks to join the saffron brigade.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will arrive in Assam on December 26 to lay the groundwork for the elections and as many as 4 Congress MLAs are being rumoured to be line up to join the BJP in his presence.
The Congress in October expelled its MLA Rajdeep Gowala in Assam for a period of six years for "anti-party" activities.
"The Congress president has approved the proposal of the expulsion of Rajdeep Gowala, MLA, Assam, from the party for a period of six years for indulging in anti-party activities," KC Venugopal, AICC general secretary (Organisation), said in a statement.
Another Congressman, Sushanta Borgohain, who was rumoured to be eyeing a departure from the Congress, has released a video stating why he is not leaving the party in spite of the turmoil within the party ranks.
The rumour mill is abuzz with reports that the MLAs will be dropped from the Grand Old Party later in the evening today. However, Inside Northeast has been unable to independently verify the reports so far.
