Silchar, October 6, 2019:

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday went pandal hopping across various Durga Puja pandals in Silchar of Barak Valley in Assam.

The Minister shared various pictures where he can be seen soaking in the blessings of the Goddess as well as interacting with the people.

Biswa Sarma wrote in a tweet, “I feel lucky to be able to seek blessings of Ma Durga in the Puja Pandals of Silchar. I hope and pray that Ma Durga showers her blessings on all of us.”

It may be mentioned that the heavily-Bengali populated Barak Valley observes Durga Puja as its most important festival and the festivities are observed with pomp and grandeur during the season.

Durga Puja, also called Durgotsava, is an annual Hindu festival originating in the Indian subcontinent which reveres and pays homage to the Hindu goddess, Durga. This year, the Puja began on Saturday, October 5, and Vijaya Dashami, the final day of the puja celebrations, is to be observed on October 8.

Reacently, the Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma spoke about the implications of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and it’s future at a massive rally held at the predominantly Bengali-speaking Barak Valley.

The Finance Minister has further affirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will introduce the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill at any costs.

Himanta said that the “real NRC” will only come after the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill — which seeks to provide citizenship to religious minorities from neighboring countries — is enacted.

“There will be a free and fair NRC in India. However, it will only come after the amandment of the Citizenship Act. It is because people will keep fearing they have to go to Foreigners Tribunals”, he said.
