BAKSA: Election fever is running rampant in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) in Assam, the struggles of the common men and women who dwell in these parts have perhaps gone unnoticed for a while. The story of Monica Boro -- a supremely talented athlete from a yeoman family who has become bedridden after becoming afflicted with a kidney affliction -- perhaps needs telling.

Monica, a netball player who has played at the national level, was born to Bahiram Boro and Pramila Boro in the remote Betagaon located in Baksa district in the Bodo-dominated region of Assam.

Monica, who had been pursuing sports since 2013 (when she was studying in the ninth standard), now lies in a severely unwell state, unable to pursue her passion anymore because of the debilitating ailment.

"I am facing a financial crisis, due to which we are unable to continue the treatment. I am in dire need of help," the youngster told media persons, making an appeal for help. "I appeal the CM and the Health Minister to give us economic aid so that I can continue my treatment."

Inside Northeast was informed that this budding athlete's career was nipped in the bud after one of her kidneys suffered a failure at a very young age in the year 2017.

Although her father sold off much of his ancestral lands to gather money for her treatment, there has been no improvement in the youngster's condition.

"Although we have spent close to Rs. 8 lakh on her treatment, there has been no improvement, which is quite disturbing," her father lamented.

Monica's inability to pursue her career has also worried some of the local sports organizations, as she was one of the brightest prospects in the local netball scene.

Well-wishers have chipped in with wishes and small financial inputs to help the ailing athlete, but to no avail. She still lies in the same state.

The girl, who was once brimming with life and passion, has been bogged down by her family's economic crisis, and her parents are now seeking for her from the Government.

One of her family members disclosed to Inside Northeast that apart from netball, Monica was famed for her prowess in football and kabaddi.

At the end of their wits, her family members have urged the Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to make arrangements for her treatrment.

"To help Monica, one has to make donations to her account -- which is 34535528578 at the Goreswar Branch of the State Bank of India," a well-wisher told Inside Northeast.
