Assam: New AIIMS under BJP government with 150 beds is a toy: Tarun Gogoi

The construction of the new AIIMS at Silbharal, Changsari has been going on for some time. Former Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi has criticised the ongoing process of AIIMS under the leadership of BJP government in Assam.

Tarun Gogoi said, "having AIIMS at Guwahati with a capacity of approx. 150 beds will not make a health hub of entire South East Asia as described by Mr Sonowal. To describe it as the hub is going to be a utopian idea. Unlike Delhi AIIMS it is a toy AIIMS. We got this institute during our tenure. During the last four years, BJP govt in Assam has not been able to manage to get sanctioned any major project from the centre. Even foundation stone laying ceremony of Nimati -- Majuli river bridge over the Brahmaputra remains jhumla".

Along with that Tarun Gogoi also criticised some other issues going about in the state. "In addition, two paper mills have been closed. At Namrup Brahmaputra fertilizer no expansion has taken place till now. Same is the case with Bokakan cement factory. Advantage Assam failed to attract any notable industry", said Tarun Gogoi.

The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are a group of autonomous government public medical colleges of higher education. These institutes have been declared by an Act of Parliament as Institutes of National Importance. AIIMS New Delhi, the fore-runner institute, was established in 1956. Since then, 22 more institutes were announced. As of January 2020, fifteen institutes are operating and eight more are expected to become operational until 2025. Proposals were made for six more AIIMS.
