Guwahati, November 21, 2019:

The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) staged a torchlight protest in Guwahati today to mark their opposition to the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, likely to be introduced in the winter session of the Parliament.

The AASU leaders further warned the Government that they will not accept the Bill, nor the 'Bangladeshis' it seeks to give refuge to.

Condemning the Assam government and raising cries against the contentious Bill, the AASU leaders stated that they will not accept the Bill, which seeks to give citizenship to persecuted migrants, at any cost.

The student union leaders also condemned the Assam Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, for his alleged 'silence' over the issue.

The AASU leaders also called upon the Government to protect the Assam Accord, which they feel is being violated by the imposition of the Bill.

Addressing the media during the sidelines of the protest, AASU leader Samujjal Bhattacharya said that Assam is not a dumping ground for "illegals". "The BJP is trying is trying to create division in society based on religion -- it is now time for the indigenous people of the state to take a stand".

Bhattacharya further asserted that "communal" sentiments will never prevail in Assam, and the indigenous will eventually prevail in the end.

Meanwhile, the AASU leader Samujjal Bhattacharya has called upon Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, to finally take a stand against the Bill.

“In 1949, Nehru and Patel wanted land to house refugees, but Gopinath Bordoloi declined. Nehru and Patel then threatened to stop economic aid if the demands were not met, but the Assamese leaders took a stand”, he told reporters.
