In another sensational incident in Assam, the National Register of Citizens (NRC) has created conflict in a couple's romantic aspirations.
The couple, Shabana Begum and Dilwar Hussain had been in a long-term relationship and wanted to tie the knot. However, the NRC proved to be a major thorn in their way.
The couple had eloped following their parents’ disapproval of their relationship. However, their parents agreed to their marriage after they eloped with the condition that the groom’s name be present in the NRC draft.
Subsequently, Shabana’s father canceled his daughter’s marriage to Dilwar when the latter’s name was not found in the NRC list. He further filed an abduction case against the groom and his brothers in the Cachar Police station.
On the other hand, Dilwar’s family said that Shabana’s father had demanded a sum of Rs. 5 lakh in exchange for the marriage. According to them, the marriage was canceled because of the inability to pay the sum and NRC had no relation with the case.
The couple is still on the run. Police have been looking into the matter.
Over the past few days, NRC has been a matter of concern all over the state of Assam. While people have been rushing to the centres with documents to prove their citizenship, organisations, and activists have been demanding a 100 percent re-verification of the document.
