Assam NRC: Disgruntled Minorities Burn CM Sonowal's and Co-Ordinator Hajella's Effigies

Guwahati, August 11, 2019:

Assam Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal and State NRC Co-Ordinator Prateek Hajella's effigies have been burned by disgruntled minority youths in Darrang district in Assam.

Alleging harassment to the minority communities in the name of National Register of Citizens (NRC), the minority organization -- Ittehad Front -- along with the local youths of Besimari in Darrang district moved out to the streets in protest and burned the effigies while shouting slogans against the current administration.

The organizations alleged that despite Supreme Court’s order to complete the works of NRC, the proceedings are running in a very slow pace and the minority people are being harassed for the re-verification as they have been forced to travel for 400 km to 500 km within a short period of notice.

Following this, General Secretary of the organization, Nur Islam has demanded the Supreme Court’s intervention in the matter.

They further demanded that the state government should provide a grant of Rs 20 lakhs to the kin of the deceased who lost their lives in accidents while visiting different NSK centres for hearings during the last week.
