The Hailakandi district has completed the process of updation of the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC).
According to an official release, as all works pertaining to verification process of the updation of NRC have been completed, Deputy Commissioner, Adil Khan, issued an order releasing all government employees from their assigned NRC work with immediate effect. However, the statutory officers were not exempted from NRC duty. The NRC “complete draft” is due for publication on July 30.
The NRC “part draft” was published on the intervening night of December 31 and January 1 where the names of 1.9 crore people out of the 3.29 crore applicants were incorporated.
The exercise, aimed at identifying illegal immigrants being carried out in Assam, is an outcome of a series of meetings between the central and state governments and the All Assam Students' Union.
