GUWAHATI: A number of peeved Opposition legislators from Assam today met Speaker Biswajit Daimary and Governor Jagadish Mukhi to complain about the Chief Minister's comments allegedly diminishing role in the Assembly.
Writing to the Governor and the Speaker, the opposition leaders complained that on more than one occasion, Himanta Biswa Sarma "has tried to threaten the democratic institutions and the functionaries to work as per provisions of the Indian Constitution."
The opposition leaders attributed the following quote to the Assam CM: “What will they do in the opposition benches for five years? I would rather say they should join us since we are working for welfare of people irrespective of caste, creed, and religion. I appeal to them (Opposition) to join us and work together for the public.”
The team of opposition MLAs (comprising Debabrata Saikia, Aminul Islam, Alhaj Aminul Islam, Rakibal Hussain, Bharat Narah, Manoranjan Talukdar, Wazed Ali Choudhury, and Akhil Gogoi) also took affront to the CM's statement that the District Collectors will listen only to Ministers and not to MLAs till this government is in place”.

“The MLAs work in the Assembly and frame the law. If we do something bad they can topple the Government though cannot actually do so as we have a majority. The MLAs do not decide what happens in BDO or SDO. It is the work of the Minister,” the CM had reportedly said, according to today's communique.
The MLAs further opined that "the remarks made by the Chief Minister which tries to demean the Constitutional roles and duties of the Opposition is in very bad taste and we feel that such behavior is intolerable."
"These remarks of the Chief Minister are undemocratic, unconstitutional and in violation of the provision of Indian Constitution," they added.
MLAs are members of several committees at the block level, circle levels, subdivision levels, and district levels, they further pointed out.
Finally, The leaders urged both the Governor and Speaker to advise the chief minister who has taken an oath to protect the Constitution not to pass such comments about the opposition in the future.
