Guwahati, July 7, 2019:

Some mischievous 'admins' running Facebook pages in Assam are probably having to check their backs from time-to-time as the Assam Police has begun a crackdown to arrest miscreants spreading 'fake news' on the social media platform.

Some pages which have been responsible for spreading 'fake news' as well as 'offensive' content have come under the scanner of the Assam police authorities, who have apparently already identified some of these mischievous fellows!

Speaking to Inside Northeast, Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar said that Facebook admins should be careful so that 'fake news' is not disseminated. "There are rules laid down by the Supreme Court regarding what is allowed in social media and what is not. Thus, if the admins are found to be disregarding any of the rules, they will find themselves behind bars. We have witnessed many cases in recent times -- such as the rumors of 'child grabbers' on WhatsApp -- due to which, many people had to suffer. But we launched an operation and brought the culprits to book. Thus, an admin should not only delete the 'offensive' or 'fake' posts, but should also find the source of these posts and report to the police", he said.

It is to be mentioned that there was an outcry in the State after noted Assamese actor Nipon Goswami was declared to be dead on many Assamese Facebook groups, leading to much confusion among the public.

As it turned out, Goswami is hale and hearty, but his family members have decried the irresponsible sharing of the 'fake' news.

A case has been registered under IPC 505 by family members of  Nipon Goswami.

Meanwhile, the Assam police have begun a crackdown against admins responsible for running these groups.
