Guwahati, August 22, 2019:

The Assam Government has undertaken a new initiative to adopt more 'child friendly' policing to protect the rights of the children of the State.

The new initiative, called 'Assam Police Shishu Mitra Program', was launched at a glittering fuction held in Guwahati city which was attended by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal,Social Welfare Minister Pramila Rani Brahma, Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia, among many other dignitaries.

This new initiative is expected to bring about a sustainable change in Assam and help the children of the State bloom into responsible citizens. Moreover, it is expected to sensitize the police officers to the various issues faced by the children such as child abuse, bonded labour, and other deprivations of basic child rights.

The 'child friendly police jacket' is expected to be implemented by the Assam State Police, which will ascertain that policemen refrain from wearing their khaki uniform while recording the statement of a child. Moreover, stress will be placed on attempting to better understand the psychology of children.

The Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia said that not everything is written down in the guidelines, and laid stress on the need to sensitize the police forces while dealing with children. The DGP further explained that there is a need to ensure that the children do not get affected and traumatized by some actions of the Police force.

However, implementing all these measures still remains a massive challenge, and it remains to be seen how the Assam Police implements the new policy while dealing with children.
