As the families of Nilotpal Das and Abhijeet Nath are awaiting justice, the police on Tuesday said the chargesheet in the case would be filed well inside the mandated 90 days’ time.
“We are at an advanced stage of the investigation and we will file the chargesheet well within time,” Karbi Anglong Superintendent of Police GV Siva Prasad told InsideNe.
“You can say we are almost at the conclusion level of filing the chargesheet. The case is being supervised by very senior police officers,” he added.
Altogether 49 people were arrested in connection with the lynching of Nilotpal and Abhijeet by a mob in Panjuri Kachari village under Dokmoka police station in Karbi Anglong district in the evening of June 8. All the accused persons are now in judicial custody.
Nilotpal’s father Gopal Chandra Das said he was looking forward to the Gauhati High Court which would hear the case on Wednesday. Days after the incident, the HC had taken suo moto cognizance of the incident and asked the state government and the police as to what effective measures were taken. Later on July 16, the government told the court about the security measures taken in the district.
Meanwhile, Nilotpal’s friend Ankur said: “We need a strong chargesheet to be filed in the case so that the accused cannot go scot-free”.
