UDALGURI: Rajya Sabha member Biswajit Daimary today filed his nomination as BJP candidate from Paneri constituency in the Assam assembly elections.

Daimary and Bodoland Territorial Council deputy chief Gobinda Basumatary of the United People’s Party-Liberal (UPPL) filed the nominations together. They submitted their papers with Udalguri deputy commissioner PR Gharphalia. Basumatary filed his nomination for Udalguri seat.

The two constituencies will go to polls in the third phase on April 6.

Daimary had earlier represented Tamulpur as a Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) MLA from 2001 to 2006 before being elected to the Rajya Sabha for four times. Basumatary, a former National Democratic Front of Boroland leader, is a first time candidate in the assembly elections.

Filing his nomination, Daimary expressed confidence that the BJP and the UPPL will win all the 12 seats in Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

Earlier in the day, the two leaders attended a joint rally at Diamond Field here. After filing their nominations, Assam cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is scheduled to join them in a massive rally here this afternoon.

Speaking to newpersons on the sideline, Daimary said the BPF would not win a single seat from BTR. “Hagrama (Mohilary) will have to keep on asserting that the BPF still has support. Else nobody will stand behind him now. After his party’s loss in the BTC election, he will have to say all those to keep his party alive,” the BJP leader said.

Asked about his attempt to return to the state assembly, Daimary said: “It’s a privilege for me that I am being offered an opportunity to serve the people directly by keeping myself among them. I’ll give my best to deliver the best.”
