GUWAHATI: BJP's candidate for Bhawanipur constituency is marching ahead with 30,508 votes for the 6th round followed by Congress with 9527 votes.
The counting of voting for the by polls in the five Assembly constituencies began from 8 in the morning.
The polls witnessed a cumulative voter turnout of 74.04 per cent of which the highest count at 78 per cent was recorded at Bhabanipur assembly seat
Gossaigaon resgistered a voter turnout of 77.37 per cent followed by Tamulpur 67.88 per cent.
77.56 per cent was recorded at Thowra and a 71.70 per cent turnout at Mariani seat.
The polling took place on 30th October in Gossaigaon, Bhabanipur, Tamulpur, Mariani and Thowra assembly segments, with strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols.
Bypolls in Gossaigaon and Tamulpur were required owing to the deaths of the sitting MLAs. On the other hand the incumbents of Bhabanipur, Mariani and Thowra left their seats to join the saffron clan.
Before the polls, Congress had filed a complaint to Chief electoral Officer against BJP candidate Phani Talukdar for allegedly indulging in bribery and corrupt practices by distributing money to the voters.
“It has come to the notice of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee through media reports and video clippings that the BJP candidates of Bhawani Constituency Phani Talukdar is indulging in bribery and corrupt practices by distributing money to voters outside his residence in Bhawanipur. This brazen act by the candidate is gross violation of the provision of section 123 (1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 as well s Election Commission of India’s model code of conduct”, the letter read.
Elaborating further APCC urged to take prompt and immediate action against Phani Talukdar.
“This is how BJP is making mockery of Democracy. Vote buying is in the DNA of BJP”, Assam Congress had tweeted earlier.
