Assam polls: Cracks develop in AJP-Raijor Dal alliance amid tussle over Jorhat Seat

JORHAT: Claiming that the 'Raijor Dal' holds major sway in Upper Assam's Jorhat due to robust organizational structure, the party's leaders today said that allies Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) should allow the party to contest from the Seat due to a "higher possibility" of winning.

 

Amid continuing intrigue over 'seat-sharing among allies for the ensuing polls, the 'Raijor Dal' and AJP too seem to be locked in a tussle over the much-coveted Jorhat Constituency, currently in the grasp of the ruling BJP.

 

"Since Raijor Dal has taken shape due to sacrifices made by Akhil Gogoi, the party should be able to take the protests to the Assembly floor. To resuscitate the flawed system, defeat the fascist disposition, and rejuvenate the broken economy. For this very reason, Raijor Dal was birthed," said Dilip Bordoloi, Working President of 'Raijor Dal', addressing scribes here.

 

Dibya Jyoti Sharma, the president of the 'Raijor Dal' in Jorhat, has expressed a desire to contest the polls and is likely to be confirmed by the party, he further stated.

"All the formalities have been completed already, and Dibya Jyoti Sarma is the only one who is likely to contest the polls from here," General Secretary Surjyamohan Das confirmed, adding that the party has appealed to the central committees of both the AJP and 'Raijor Dal' to allow the latter to contest from Jorhat.

The 'Raijor Dal' leaders further opined that the people of Jorhat are more likely to accept a representative who fought tooth and nail against the 'nation destroying' Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

 

"To breach the BJP fortress in Jorhat, we should try to field a candidate who fits the bill so that he has a greater possibility of winning the faith of the people, and hence, the election," Bordoloi added.

 

Stating that Akhil Gogoi remains a huge draw in the Upper Assam constituency, Bordoloi further contended that people want the 'Raijor Dal' given its leader's "uncompromising nature" and "charismatic personality."

 

"Therefore, it would be wise to channel the angst against his prolonged and unnecessary incarceration to orchestrate an election win in Jorhat," he added.

 

"The Raijor Dal and AJP will confirm seat sharing and float candidates in each of the 126 Seats; in Jorhat, however, the 'Raijor Dal' has made greater strides and the grassroots-level people have expressed that they want the party to contest the polls.

 

Stating that the tea tribe labourers are "losing faith" in the BJP-led coalition government, the 'Raijor Dal' affirmed that it would look after the long pending concerns of the "ignored lot."

 

Soon after, decorum gave way to bedlam as supporters of the party broke into loud chants yelling that their candidate should be floated from Jorhat "at any cost."

 

On Friday last, the Election Commission of India announced that Assam will go to Assembly elections in three phases beginning March 27.

 

The counting of votes will take place on May 2.
