Power tariffs in Assam is likely to rise by 24 percent from April, 2020 owing to the rising cost of electricity.
The tariff is likely to increase from the existing Rs 7.25 kWh to Rs 8.85 kWh in the domestic category and in the commercial category, it may rise to Rs 9.45 kWh from existing Rs. 7.60 kWH.
Similarly, the energy charge per unit will be Rs. 160 in the domestic and Rs 1.85 in commercial categories.

According to the Assam Electricity Regulatory Commission (AERC) Chairman, Subhas Chandra Das, the new power tariff will be effective from April 1, 2020. He also informed that the revised rates will be published by March 15.
It may be mentioned here that Assam has been purchasing electricity from outside in order to meet its requirements. Time and again the plight of the electricity department came to light after the state department expressed that it has become unable to bear the rising expenses.

Meanwhile, the Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited (APDCL) has sent a proposal to increase the power tariffs to make up the increasing cost to purchase the same.
