Assam: Protestors remove poster, warns government not to impose Assamese language at Barak Valley

SILCHAR: Several organisations on Sunday staged protest at Silchar Railway Station against the installation of a government awareness poster – Jal Jeevan Mission- written in Assamese language.

SILCHAR: Several organisations on Sunday staged protest at Silchar Railway Station against the installation of a government awareness poster – Jal Jeevan Mission- written in Assamese language. The Barak Democratic Youth Front (BDYF) and All Bengali Students Youth Organisation (ABSYO) claimed that the Government poster which is written in Assamese violates the 1961 language pact that states Bengali language as the official language in Cachar and Barak Valley.

Protesting against the poster, the members of both organisations covered the posters with black ink and asked the government to write it in Bengali.

The protest was led by the BDYF members, Debayan Deb, Debraj Dasgupta, Hrisikesh Dey, Jaydip Bhattacharjee, and ABSYO delegates, Ajit Das vice president Raju Deb, Rajib Das, Mithu Das, Samar Das, Tipul Das, Haradhan Dutta.

They further urged the people of Barak to remove the posters wherever they find them.

The agitators also demanded that the government take appropriate step to fulfil the issue.
